Preparing for the PACT

Performance Assessment for California Teachers--Overview
The PACT, or Performance Assessment for California Teachers, is an alternate TPA for preservice teachers that has currently been adopted by over 30 state and private colleges and universities with teacher preparation programs. PACT addresses the essential question, what does effective teaching look like? Created by a consortium now called PACT Central at Stanford in 2003, the latest information, handbooks, and important documents on PACT can be accessed at http://pacttpa.org.

The heart of PACT is the Teaching Event. PACT teacher candidates produce a structured Teaching Event (TE) document that averages 45-50 pages, along with two 10-minute video clips that showcase the best practices of 3-5 hours or approximately one week of student teaching. Taken together, the TE and video clips are known as the unified learning segment. Video clip requirements vary, both in number and length, according to single or multiple subjects and subject area.

The PACT TE reflects the candidate's knowledge and abilities in four key areas or tasks: planning, instruction, assessment, and reflection. Candidates are also required to write a context commentary on the demographic features of their school and target population. They must identify the academic language needs of their students and appropriate strategies across all tasks.
